Just because fast food is cheap and prepared quickly doesn’t mean that it should be sold or consumed in a space that also seems cheap and done on the quick. Interior architect Steve Leung and graphic designer Alan Chan have proven this with their stylish interior for MX, a chain in Hong Kong that hired the pair to help it rebrand and present an entirely new look—albeit one with a strongly retro feel.

To capture the essence of Chinese culture, Chan designed a new “blooming heart” logo for MX, which had previously been known as Maxim’s. Its 12 hearts represent a budding flower full of life and energy, knowing no boundaries and expanding in all directions. Leung matched this logo with pure, innocent white tones that define the concept of retro-chic in the dining room. Red tones, meanwhile, pervade the restaurant’s cashier and food service areas. The designers repeated the heart theme throughout the space to reinforce MX’s new brand identity: a heart-shaped mosaic, for instance, covers one wall.

White fiberglass furniture defines a relaxed, stress-free dining room, while oversized red lamps and small television screens grace the top of each table. But the true stars of this space are 16 custom-made art pieces decorating the walls: heart illustrations created by 16 Asian artists. The designers intend these panels to reflect and embody the thoughts, feelings, and actions of MX’s employees and customers.
