Karla creates bold, stark, and innovative events and floral arrangements for the entertainment industry and corporate world. In designing its studio, housed in a 12,000-square-foot former warehouse, Rene Gonzalez Architect developed an equally stark and innovative luminous volume that forms a backdrop for the company’s striking creations. A white, modulated entry facade contrasts with the stern oxidized Corten steel wall that separates the garden and office from the surrounding industrial neighborhood. Large concrete pavers artfully accentuate the entry into the lustrous lobby.

To set the mood and organize the interior, the architect created a central axis tunnel of light. Silky epoxy floors paired with custom-designed acrylic light walls define the lobby, conference room, and reception. The lobby is minimally staged with two benches and a single sculpture, leaving space to showcase Karla’s designs. Hand-sewn wallpaper by Tracy Kendall accents the walls behind a custom white cantilevered reception desk. A 12-foot high wall with a subtle metallic Venetian plaster finish separates the lobby from the conference room. Translucent panels there reveal Karla’s designers creating arrangements in the production area.

A simple, white multipurpose room used for installations and events adjoins on one side of the central acrylic light walls, while on the other side is Karla’s main office area. It is a simple white space, defined by custom-designed workstations and Interface Flor carpet squares. The architect located executive offices between this area and the production rooms. Sliding white acrylic windows define both sides of the executive offices and allow views over the entire facility. Custom light fixtures, wall finishes, and furniture, some developed in collaboration with artists, compliment Karla’s creative work.
