Program: A 24,140-square-foot waterworks facility. The three-story concrete structure houses 10 large water pumps, pump controls, water service monitoring, and interpretive exhibits. An adjacent below-grade concrete water reservoir stores potable water and lends its roof as the main parking lot.
Design concept and solution: The architects created a waterworks facility that not only contains a 20-million-gallon water reservoir and the equipment necessary for water purveyance, but also provides an informative tour and exhibits to educate visitors about the facility. Visitors enter the building through a 12-foot diameter concrete pipe to experience how water passes through underground pipes. Visitors then proceed to the second level where they walk along a viewing deck and witness the processes of the facility. In order to absorb the vibrations from pump equipment the building is almost entirely poured-in-place concrete.
