The design of the new nursing tower and southeast wing defines the main entrance to Swedish Medical Center, a thirteen-block campus that has grown over the years into one of the largest urban medical campuses in Seattle. This project integrates architecture, technology, landscape, wayfinding, and context into one meaningful composition, supplementing Swedish’s role as a major acute care hospital with an ambulatory care services center and establishing a landmark identity for its role as a regional healthcare leader.

The opposing curve of the front façade of the building offers a welcome that is strengthened by the elegance of the entry dome located in the main lobby. The interiors are comfortable surroundings that honor the human spirit in many ways, encouraging relaxed interaction with family members and friends, deflecting from the institutional feel that is prevalent in many large hospitals. Skylights, windows, and open bays provide natural light and a sense of openness that promotes patient wellness and can speed recovery. Recessed lighting softens the light in the facility and lively geometrical patterns in the floors work with the curve of the walls to help direct people as they walk around.

Through lighted display alcoves located at the end of corridors and in special niches, Swedish’s notable art collection is integrated into the interiors, conveying a message of hope, healing and courage. The artwork also camouflages medical cases and screens waiting areas. The result is a healing facility filled with creative and inspiring works that demonstrate Swedish Medical Center’s commitment to delivering high quality medical care in a comfortable and family friendly environment.
