This medical facility specializes in
clinical patient care and ocular surgery, performing numerous
procedures every day. The glass central atrium organizes the
facilitys complex program, while providing natural light
and views of the sky in the interior spaces. The emphasis
on "seeing" in the design coincides conceptually
with the basic mission of the facilityto restore sight
to the patients. The theme of transparency is continued into
the technical areas and consultation rooms, creating a fluid
environment that aids in the dialogue between medical staff
and patients. This openness is maximized in the operating
room, where park and avenue views can be enjoyed. Located
above the buildings main access, the operating room
has a panoramic window that juts out, interrupting the smooth
geometry of the front facade.
Located on a busy Buenos Aires avenue,
the buildings sculptural form of curvaceous walls breaks
the monotony of a crowded and aging urban environment to create
a memorable and easily recognized landmark. The project derives
its form from the surrounding low-rise domestic scale. The
formal qualities of the project are enhanced by the selection
of materials. In a city where high levels of pollution and
humidity are common, the finishes are durable and easy to
maintain. This includes stone, pre-patinated copper, aluminum
and reflexive glass in natural tones to avoid painting.
