Client: Healtheast Care System

Date Completed: November 2008

Program: 175,000 square feet of new space for a patient tower with 90 private patient rooms, radiology, and outpatient services, a 15,000-square foot emergency department expansion, and additional hospital renovation.

Design concept and solution: To reflect their client’s mission—providing spiritually-based care for the community—the architects integrated warm cherry wood into the interiors and created a pedestrian-friendly corridor that connects visitors to downtown St. Paul via a series of parks. The steel structured building, clad in brick, pre-cast concrete, and a curtainwall, is designed to provide a continuum of inpatient care: the needs of critical care and surgery patients can be met on one floor, potentially allowing them to remain in the same room for the duration of their stay.

Gross square footage:
181,000 sq. ft.

Total construction cost:
$52,422,500
