Date Completed: February 2008

Program: The 11-story, 492,000-square-foot health care facility set on 4.87 acres includes 240 patient beds, 21 surgical suites, and 50,000-square-feet dedicated to research laboratories, and an education and conference facility for clinical researchers.

Design concept and solution:To maximize connections with existing buildings and to optimize views of Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens, the architects created an L-shaped plan so that the north and east facades capture the surrounding views. In order to blend the new medical center with existing campus buildings, the firm selected brick to clad the steel-framed building. To create a residential interior atmosphere, the design draws upon themes of nature. A skylit atrium and clerestory windows suffuse the interior with daylighting.
