Kings County Hospital Center provides medical care to an underserved, largely uninsured patient population in the center of Brooklyn, N.Y. It is also a major teaching hospital. In a renovation and expansion project encompassing three phases, the hospital sought to transform the patient, caregiver, and community experience.

Skidmore Owings & Merrill’s master plan replaced obsolete clinical buildings with a state-of-the-art, efficient, and flexible healthcare campus. The new complex consists of three linked pavilions: an Inpatient Center, a Diagnostic and Treatment Center, and an Ambulatory Care Center. In contrast to the old, fortress-like and inward-looking buildings that had turned their backs on the neighborhood, these structures celebrate the city.

Windows along the main, southern elevation forge a connection with the streetscape and flood interior spaces with daylight. The entry pavilion stretches along this façade, providing three separate entrances for emergency care, ambulatory treatment, and regular visitors. Corridors branch off perpendicularly from this concourse and lead into the depth of the building. The interior materials palette, though limited to the plastic laminates common in health care facilities, displays elegance and restraint.
