Program: A 9,200-square-foot maintenance facility, and 1.3 miles of streetcar line.

Design concept and solution: The Seattle Streetcar was created in an effort to transform Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood into a vibrant urban community. The streetcar’s route includes 11 stops every three blocks to connect the area to the downtown business district. Each streetcar seats 140 passengers. As the neighborhood develops, it is predicted that one million riders will eventually use the streetcar each year. The 11 platforms that line the 1.3 miles of track are designed to compliment the surrounding retail frontages and streetscape. Yet, each platform has a common function: they facilitate rainwater runoff via subtle grading and they border landscaped areas to receive runoff. The project includes a streetcar maintenance facility for vehicle storage and streetcar repairs. Interlocking trays planted with sedum create a green roof system. The roof offers a pleasant view to neighboring residents, while the system helps mitigate stormwater runoff and allows for cost-effective roof maintenance.
