Program: A 38,620-square-foot courthouse set on five acres in west Texas.

Design concept and solution: The russet-colored sandstone courthouse in Alpine, Texas, is designed in the Trans-Pecos tradition and appears to rise from the surrounding plains. The local dry-stacked sandstone creates harmony with the topography, while a double-height rotunda establishes a distinguished presence. Ramadas, traditional sun shelters, shade windows along the east, south, and west of the structure. The courthouse functions are contained on the second floor. The first floor is accessed by an open covered walkway.
