This former nineteenth-century industrial
building located on the Dickinson College campus was renovated
to provide space for a shared vision of both an administrative
and arts faculty. Conceived as 32 live/work studios for 120
students, the building combines student housing with art studio
spaces, galleries, and a community cafe, designed to provide
a place for interaction between two distinct campus groups.
Once numerous additions and modifications
were peeled away from the building, the historic core revealed
an excellent starting point for adaptive reuse. The new design
reveals and celebrates the dialogue between new features and
the beauty of the existing structure, including its narrow
width, large windows, and industrial skylights. The heavy
timber and masonry of the original building remains exposed,
and is a simple and cost-effective architectural response.
This clear articulation of both old and new construction methods
demonstrates to residents how buildings are made and how they
can be improved.
