Program: A 300,000-square-foot museum that includes a gift shop, restaurant, café, offices, and exhibition space.
Design concept and solution: The Porsche Museum was designed to be the iconic center of Porscheplatz, the automaker’s Zuffenhausen headquarters. Railroad tracks and access roads cutting through the site determined the building’s asymmetrical shape, but it also appears to levitate above such limitations. Clad with white painted metal and supported by a three-dimensional steel lattice and three concrete pylons, the museum appears to hover above the industrial topography. Visitors approach the museum via a gently sloping ramp that leads to a forecourt, which features a polished stainless steel soffit to reflect the surroundings. The first floor includes a foyer, reception area, restaurant, and museum shop. A central staircase provides access to the second-level exhibition hall, which is furnished with welded white mineral panels to provide a monochrome backdrop to the colorful cars on display.
