Program: A 43,000-square-foot museum with exhibition space and an underground level that serves as a “wine cellar of art.”
Design concept and solution: From the bottom of its plateaued site, only a portion of Museum Liaunig is visible; the elongated concrete structure is literally embedded into the landscape for much of its 520 feet. The southeastern end of the building protrudes over a steep embankment and road below, offering approaching visitors a hint of its form. An expansive entrance provides space for readings and exhibition openings. A tubular core serves as exhibition space that is illuminated by a translucent skin stretched across an arched steel roof. Lightweight modular panels, composed of high-density fiberboard, allows for flexible interior display configurations. The exhibition hall is bookended by glass-walled terraces that look out onto the surrounding landscape.
