Program: A 21,520-square-foot museum housing a gallery for temporary exhibitions, gift shop, cafe, learning center, administrative offices, permanent gallery space, and storage for the museum’s large collection of painting and sculpture.
Design concept and solution: The Fuglsang Kunstmuseum is situated on a historic estate that includes a low-rise Manor House and barn. The brick museum structure takes its cues from the surrounding architecture: the façade is painted white to match the barn, and three grey brick cubes protruding from the roof—light wells illuminating the gallery spaces below—echo the Manor House’s three gables. The museum houses a collection of Danish art from roughly 1780-1980. To accommodate that range of work, the interior galleries offer varied exhibition spaces from subtle white walls to fully glazed rooms that open onto views of the sea and surrounding landscape.
