Program: A three-story 4,840-square-foot museum that includes a bookshop, ticket office, foyer, administrative office, exhibition spaces, and an underground exhibition level.
Design concept and solution: To display work by 15th-century Italian Renaissance painter Benozzo Gozolli, Massimo Mariani Studio designed a museum to contain two of the artist’s tabernacles—both of which were temporarily housed at the local public library until an appropriate space could be constructed—and other significant Gozolli frescoes. Located in the historic center of Castelfiorentino, and clad in terracotta tiles produced by the Italian manufacturer Sannini, the museum takes on the appearance of the historic brick church facades from which some of the work inside came. Yet, the asymmetrical and elongated horizontal and vertical windows that open the ceramic façade add contemporary angles to the contextualizing material.
