The architects began the creative process for this project by examining the early vernacular architecture and the native materials of Mesquite and rural Nevada. Built with river rock from the nearby Virgin River, the 4000-square-foot art center compliments and builds upon the existing Heritage Museum, located on the southwest quadrant of the site.

To avoid overshadowing the scale of the museum, the program of the art center was broken down into small components organized around a central court: the feature gallery, classrooms, artist studio, and gallery/administration spaces. Weathered steel wraps the studio facility and gallery/administrative offices while a prefabricated concrete insulated cell system provides the structure for the feature gallery. The icon of the art center is the patina silo pavilion acquired from a location on the outskirts of Mesquite and relocated to the central courtyard.
