The site for these apartments is an affluent residential neighborhood of Dornbirn, Austria, distinguished by historicist villas surrounded with park-like gardens. It was made available following the demolition of a 1960s-hotel that had been built onto an old inn. This older inn was rehabilitated and now occupies the site’s southeast corner.
The apartment complex is comprised of four cube-shaped buildings, one of which is set at an angle on the site’s north side to provide a constructional boundary. The architects arranged the buildings in such a way that the surrounding greenery is integrated and affords privacy for the development’s interior.
All of the apartments have spacious terraces, balconies or loggias that are fitted with glass elements so they can be easily closed. The buildings’ exterior is clad in a striking but elegant rough masonry, punctuated by floor-to-ceiling wood windows. The apartments are an attractive alternative to traditional, single-family houses in the neighborhood.
