This 16,100 square-foot classroom addition to an existing school just north of San Francisco was designed as a comfortable, open, day-lit facility, with excellent durability and low maintenance. The program consists of nine new classrooms, public space for lockers and social activities, and miscellaneous support spaces. Sustainability was the prominent theme. Classrooms have balanced daylighting supplied from two or more sides. Direct and indirect pendant light fixtures provide excellent light quality at low foot-candle levels. Light bulbs are low-mercury, with high color rendition, and half the fixtures include dimming ballasts and photosensors.

In lieu of air-conditioning, sloped roofs have an integral radiant barrier and flat roofs have single-ply white roofing both to reduce heat gain. Most windows are shaded with overhangs, sunshades, or trees to control sunlight, and window glazing reduces heat. Half of the classrooms have cross ventilation with high clerestory windows to exhaust warm air. The others have passive chimneys to exhaust warm air and provide cross ventilation. To improve next-day comfort, ventilation works at night to cool the building mass. Many sources of indoor pollutants were reduced or eliminated.

Extensive native planting in the courtyard includes a habitat garden designed to attract a variety of insects and bird species and used in the education of the students. The middle school students have enthusiastically embraced the design and organized tours of the green building features for their parents at the grand opening of their new school.
