In response to the district’s strong educational vision and growing student population, this 1952 high school needed additional space to support the innovation and dynamic learning expected by today’s teachers, administration, parents, and students. The resulting renovations to the existing structure and media center addition reinvigorates the school with an architecturally significant structure, provides space for 1,200 students, and creates flexible areas for diverse learning environments.

Without disturbing the existing trees or site, the media center is designed as a distinctive structure with a gentle curve, complimenting the main building while introducing a modern element. Blending the new addition with the existing building was a key component to the architectural design. Matching the original building’s brick façade proved challenging to the design team. The variations in color required careful matching and placement of six different brick types throughout the exterior walls. The result is a seamless transition from the old to the new, bringing the entire facility into the 21st century.

The massing of the media center transforms the existing entry and building enclosure into a u-shaped courtyard entrance located off the main drive onto campus. The curve of the reading room creates an outward response that reflects the curve of the road. The materials of the new media center include a variegated range brick, anodized aluminum fascias, and clear glass. These extend the vocabulary of the original building, while introducing a fresh image.
