This 1950s era junior high school
was updated to the twenty-first-century in order to accommodate
team teaching and technology, while doubling its capacity
to 1,200 students. An extensive, two-story classroom addition
contains a new media center at the heart of the academic area
of the school. High windows in the two-story library make
the space open and airy.
New and existing rooms for learning have
been organized into clusters connected by a variety of usable
common areas. Breakout spaces provide casual yet supervised
settings for small group work, informal conferencing, and
special events. Each of these has built-in window seats, data
and video connections, and a whiteboard. Large public spaces
provide room for other types of teaming. Developed as a result
of meetings with parents and staff, the student commons and
main lobby are used for community activities as well as extracurricular
eventsall critical to educating the whole child. Accommodation
for 200 vehicles and after-hours community use of the facility
were also provided.
