Winner of the prestigious Harleston Parker
Award in 1999 for the most beautiful architecture in the City
of Boston, this new elementary and middle school includes
23 classrooms, as well as specialized teaching rooms for science,
industrial arts, music, art, home economics, and computer
study.
Completed for $115 per square foot, the
85,000 square foot school houses 450 students in grades K-8.
Inside, three classroom wings fan out from a main street,
which connects the public and community spaces, which include
a library, cafeteria, gymnasium , and theater. Short corridors
are designed like village streetsthey connect a sequence
of spaces that support and encourage interaction, exploration,
and activity among students. Dormers, bays, and varied window
designs define a variety of areas for learning within each
classroom. The schools architecture complements the
historic Brookline, Mass., neighborhood in which it is sited.
