Clovis Memorial District Conference Center
A veteran center gets a much-needed upgrade.
The original Clovis Memorial District conference center, which had been incrementally added to over the years, housed a number of meeting rooms, but lacked a central entry, or gathering space. The renovation of the conference center provided an opportunity to expand the facilities and correct the building’s deficiencies, while giving the organization a much-needed identity to support its commemoration of veterans within the Clovis area.

The newly expanded 20,200-square-foot center houses a 350-seat auditorium, offices, and meeting rooms that are situated around the lobby entrance. The lobby is used as both exhibition space for veteran’s artifacts, and as a pre-event space. An interior courtyard and adjacent corridor link the new addition to the existing building.
The addition is sensitive to the scale of the existing building and its neighbors, while housing the larger program elements within. Limestone wraps the exterior of the auditorium, which has a civic and monumental presence that relates to the brick buildings of the old town center. The auditorium’s entrance facade features a large glazed opening that reduces the building’s mass while allowing filtered light inside.
Light is a key element that unifies the design throughout. The glazed entrance to the north and the glass-enclosed courtyard to the south suffuse the central lobby with light. A ribbon of glazing along the limestone wall of the auditorium allows light to wash down the stone, exposing the details of the texture. Together, the plaza, lobby, and courtyard provide an entry sequence and public presence that were lacking in the previous facility.
