Program: The 4,840-square-foot university music studio includes five practice rooms, a percussion room, a studio technician room, two control rooms, and two studios.
Design concept and solution: To contain the sound produced within the three-story building, and to protect the interior studios from exterior noise, the architects chose sheets of vulcanized rubber to cover the insulated, box-like structure. Sheets of rubber were welded together to form four large walls, each weighing half a ton. The rubber was then pulled taut across the building; stainless steel studs were screwed into reinforcing plates, creating a quilted effect.
