This 75,000-square-foot facility, which includes renovation and new construction, unites physicians, healthcare providers, hospitals, medical societies, and congregations of faith under one roof for the purpose of promoting well-being by nurturing both body and spirit. Seven art installations, done by nationally-recognized artists collaborating with one another and with the architects, were integrated throughout the facility to represent the five virtues of compassion, gentleness, kindness, humility, and patience that reflect the center’s purpose.

The complexity of the center’s mission is represented in the struggle between both the linear and curved building elements, as well as the corrugated metal building panel, the slick composite panel, and the glass curtain wall. The struggle and subsequent finding of balance is similar to the one that the center faces daily—the one between spirituality and science.

A bridge-like pathway leading to the front door through a garden area with dry grasses, reeds, and stones—designed to symbolize a dry riverbed that is no longer nourishing the land or sustaining life—begins the journey to a healthier life. To the immediate left inside the front door, the sight, sound, and feel of a 30-foot water wall sculpture symbolizes transformation, healing, and life-giving spirit.

A cathedral-like entry pavilion acts as the main circulation artery. It directly or visually connects all main public spaces. The ground floor contains the primary reception, prescription for wellness area, chapel, orientation theater, training kitchen, therapy pool, and meeting rooms.

The second floor contains a central interior courtyard, exercise rooms, racquetball courts, offices, studios, and a main activity area. The cardio theater, weight machines, full basketball court and a walking track are located within this space. The sculpted ceiling and patterned flooring help to visually link these areas.
