A progressive and entrepreneurial group practice of 20 radiologists sought to consolidate offices and expand their service offerings. And while they also sought a fully digital, state-of-the-art facility—with a dedicated area for women’s imaging—they wanted the building to provide a reassuring atmosphere for patients that would help demystify and soften an otherwise high-tech environment.

Stanley Beaman & Sears designed the center to command its corner site, creating a powerful image for visitors and patients. Using a modern aesthetic and animated building forms, their design celebrates the high-tech nature of the practice as well as the energy that is characteristic of the client group. The interior spaces, while contemporary in character, reflect the humanistic ideals of the client through a warm color palette, natural materials, and artwork specifically selected to reinforce the human side of healthcare.

In organizing the building, the architects were inspired by the images resulting from CT scans and other imaging equipment, in which each layer reveals something new about the body. They conceived of the building as a series of layers: first a modern exterior of brick, metal, and glass that reveals a warm lobby within; next a layer of translucent glass planes that divide interior spaces; and finally a view toward the imaging equipment itself, where screens illuminate colorful and complex images.
