Program: A 13,400-square-foot arts foundation incorporating leasable office space, a gallery, and three work-live studios for visiting artists.
Design concept and solution: To turn a 1920s concrete barn into a flexible, mixed-use facility looking out onto the surrounding vineyards.
Jensen removed the roof and erected a new glass building within the original barn walls. The frameless glass rises above the original walls and floods the interior with light, while large cuts in the concrete exterior create ground-floor views of the landscape. The team created open, loftlike offices and studios to give clients the most flexibility, and they enhanced the feeling of lightness with mirrorlike exposed concrete, custom Italian stucco, and burnished-finish aluminum access floor system.
