Program: A 70,000-square-foot, 14-story boutique hotel with 120 guest rooms, a restaurant, a lounge, private dining rooms, and a fitness center.

Design concept and solution: To combine the grandeur of the 19th-century Neo-Romanesque exterior of the historic Ames Building with a modern interior that feels sleek and intimate.

While the lobby of this former office building remains imposing--Rockwell kept the original vaulted ceiling, complete with its marble mosaic, and the marble and brass staircase--the rooms adhere to a more streamlined aesthetic. Pale oak flooring and 10-foot ceilings contribute to their overall lightness, as do frosted glass and sheer curtains. Little details invoke the building's history, from black chrome lamps referencing whale-oil lamps from old Boston to the old doorknob designs etched onto the elevator doors.

Gross square footage:
70,000 sq. Ft.
