Program: A 143,886-square-foot building that includes 78 undergraduate residential suites and faculty apartments, seminar and common rooms, faculty offices, a dining hall, servery, and kitchens. A game room, cafe, kitchen, dining room, laundry facilities, fitness center, woodshop, letterpress print shop, and a 60-seat theater are housed in the basement.
Design concept and solution: Newman Architects worked to embody the philosophy and thoughts of theologian Jonathan Edwards in the renovation of his namesake building. Quotations attributed to Edwards are etched into design elements throughout the building. To maintain the spirit of the original building, the architects exposed existing materials and fully restored the exterior envelope. The firm replaced mechanical and electrical systems, renovated the interior spaces, and restored the courtyard. New stairs and elevators link the formerly misaligned structures, while a new central stair connects the front door of the college to the basement, which was cleared for enlarged social and recreational spaces. A new tunnel beneath the courtyard doubles as an art gallery and completes a continuous loop of circulation.
