This project is an adaptive reuse of the Sterling Divinity Quadrangle, designed by Delano & Aldrich and completed in 1932. It provides a renovated building for sacred, social and instructional spaces; library; administrative and faculty offices of the Yale Divinity School; the Institute of Sacred Music; and the Berkeley Divinity School. The adaptive reuse was a multi-phased construction process that began in 2000 and was completed in 2003. The school remained fully operational throughout.

The pavilions of the west quadrangle, formerly student residences, were connected by new ramps on the first and second floors and converted to instructional and administrative uses. These ramps, along with new elevators, make the entire complex fully accessible. New enclosures on the second floor appear light in weight but also merge with new slate roofs.

In three pavilions of the west quadrangle, portions of the second floors were removed to create double-height spaces for the Institute of Sacred Music Great Hall and Organ Studio, and a large lecture hall. Other pavilions were renovated to accommodate instructional and common spaces, offices, seminar rooms, and classrooms. The library was reorganized and renovated.

This project fosters a sense of community by making all parts of the each building accessible to each other, creating new paths of circulation, and relocating program elements to benefit from proximity.
