NY Design Week

NY Design Week   July 2012
Although New York City doesn’t yet have a massive citywide design festival comparable to those in Milan and London, this year’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) at the Jacob K. Javits Center made up for it with a solid showing of new and returning exhibitors.

Milan Salone del Mobile

Milan Salone del Mobile   June 2012
During Milan’s annual Salone del Mobile, the city truly becomes the world capital of design—from the main event at the Rho Pero fairgrounds, to off-site exhibits at the Triennale Design Museum and the Museum of Science and Technology, to the streets of neighborhoods like Via Tortona and Ventura Lambrate. We present a few of our finds over three days at the show, from a textured, architectural glass line to a modern (plastic) take on the classic Windsor chair.

Here we present a few highlights, including a new concept for using video in the office and a conference table with a split personality.

KBIS  July 2009
Big-brand no-shows may have tempered the buzz of this year’s Kitchen & Bath Industries Show, but the prevailing mood was surprisingly upbeat. Many manufacturers played it safe by expanding existing lines or reengineering them to improve water and energy efficiency, while others embraced superficiality: new finishes, textured surface treatments, and an emphasis on flush installations.

Chicago - Coverings

Chicago - Coverings  June 2009
This year’s Coverings began with bleak news, as the Tile Council of North America reported that 2008 sales totaled only 2.1 billion square feet of surfaces, a 21.5 percent — and $2.4 billion — decline from 2006 highs. Responding to the recessionary climate, exhibitors embraced conservatism. Tile makers showed off restrained patterns and color palettes or banked on enduring trends, like sustainability.

Stockholm Furniture Fair

Stockholm Furniture Fair  April 2009
Scandinavian design, known for its clean lines and economic use of materials, also draws heavily upon craft techniques and a sense of individuality. All these strands were on show at the Stockholm Furniture Fair, where colorful, multifunctional products had their day in the wintertime sun.

IBS  April 2009
Although this year’s International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas drew a third fewer attendees than last year’s, the show still saw the introduction of a range of innovative products as the industry tries to make itself more environmentally friendly.

Design Miami Design Miami  March
A day prior to the preview of Design Miami, America learned it had endured a yearlong recession. But the news didn’t faze the design-art showcase’s 23 participating galleries. VIPs crowded Design Miami’s vernissage, and in interviews several dealers were optimistic that buyers would respond well to the upscale limited editions on display. Perhaps the greatest signal of such confidence: their championing as many fresh-faced designers as bankable stars. In a similarly hopeful vein, a number of Design Miami satellite events launched all-new businesses.

London • 100% Design

London • 100% Design  January 2009
In these shaky financial times, straightforward goods and tried-and-true techniques are in vogue. At London’s 100% Design, this proclivity was seen in the accent on craftsmanship and preference for such honest materials as wood, metal, and leather.
