Lighting

Designers of architectural lighting are redefining buildings’ necessary connective tissue with moments of poetry and delight. While their makers’ motivations differ, these three featured projects, in China, France, and California, underscore infrastructure’s artistic potential. Online Extra: Rate and comment on all three projects.

Practice Matters: Nonprofit Work Experience Is Beneficial for All, but Far Too Rare

Public and nonprofit practices are playing an increasing role in the development of young architects. And the entrepreneurialism, close client contact, and quality design work achieved by these emerging architects make them desirable for traditional firms that want experienced interns.

On the Boards: Unbuilt Projects

We explore three projects in the Arabian Peninsula: Zaha Hadid's Opus, a speculative office/retail complex in Dubai with a free-form void in its center; Nadel Architects' Al Faisaliah Tower, which must accomodate the Saudi custom of separating the sexes; and a giant, underwater hotel complex.

Call for Entries: Product Reports

In our annual Product Reports feature, a jury of architects, editors, and design experts will select the year's most interesting and useful new building products to include in the December issue. The deadline to submit is Sept. 7.

Essay: The Engineer's Moment

A shift in the architecture profession, already entrenched with issues of control and authorship, affords the engineer an expanded role during initial project design discussions, not just as consultants after the fact. Structural engineers are now literally drawing at the table.

AR Events: The Innovation Conference

The Innovation Conference: Architecture in an Age of Transformation. This case study-based conference will show how digital tools and new materials are being used to create extraordinary buildings. Hear keynoters William J. Mitchell, director of the MIT Design Lab, and Sir Nicholas Grimshaw, chairman of Grimshaw Architects.
