Developer "Coco" Brown Dies

The developer and entrepreneur Harry Joe Brown Jr., known to many by the nickname “Coco,” died November 23 at age 71 from complications related to prostate cancer. In recent years, Brown’s development firm, The Brown Companies, hired star architects to design Modernist vacation homes in Sagaponac, near the Hamptons in New York.

The 56-acre Houses at Sagaponac development was announced [RECORD, April 2001, pp27-28] shortly after Brown’s friend, Richard Meier, FAIA, assisted him in selecting the homes’ architects. Of the 34 homes planned, three designed by Hariri & Hariri, Annabelle Selldorf, AIA, and Henry Cobb, FAIA, are now complete. Construction is underway on homes by Stan Allen, AIA, Smith-Miller & Hawkinson, Tsao & McKown, and Stephen Kanner, FAIA. A representative for The Brown Companies said the development company is committed to building all 34 of the homes.
