The New York Metropolitan Transportation
Authority has confirmed that the historic Corbin Building,
designed by Frances Kimball and completed in 1889, will be
preserved.
The building had come under threat because
of plans for a new Fulton Street Transportation center in
Lower Manhattan after the September 11 attacks.
We have instructed any of the architects
that are involved with the transit center that they have to
make the Corbin Building a part of the design, said
Tom Kelly, MTA Director of Communications.
This is great news, said
Robert Tierney, Chairman of the New York City Historic Preservation
Commission.
The highly ornamental brick and terra
cotta building is decorated with elaborate arches and large
arcades, and has been an important part of New Yorks
historic fabric.
