The Morgenthau Wing, named in honor of
longtime museum Chairman Robert M. Morgenthau, was the first
construction project to begin in Lower Manhattan after the
September 11 terrorist attacks, the museum says. The rectangular
four-story building is made largely of granite (very similar
to the granite of the original hexagonal building). The wing
includes the 375-seat Edmond J. Safra Hall, The Garden of
Stones, a unique Memorial Garden by designer Andy Goldsworthy
made of several large boulders, a café, education center,
an event hall, and exhibitions gallery.
Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo & Associates,
creators of the original building, designed the wing, at a
cost of $60 million. The land was donated by the State of
New York. The wing will be officially dedicated at a ceremony
on September 15 at 11 a.m.
