Whitney Museum cancels Koolhaas-designed expansion

The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City has cancelled plans to build an expansion estimated to cost $200 million or more, and designed by Rem Koolhaas. Koolhaas had presented two schemes to the museum: the first would have converted four museum-owned brownstones into galleries, backed by a new 11-story building; the second joined the Whitney's main structure, designed in 1966 by Marcel Breuer, with a new nine-story structure where those brownstones now stand. Koolhaas received the commission for the expansion in February 2001. Whitney Director Maxwell L. Anderson says that the museum will focus on building its endowment instead.
