Three designs chosen as finalists for Beijing stadium

The Beijing Urban Planning Commission announced that three designs had been named as finalists in a competition to design the main stadium for the 2008 Olympics. The finalist teams are: Herzog & DeMeuron with China Architecture Design Institute; Beijing Architecture Design Institute; and Japanese AXS Company with Tsinghua University Architecture Design Institute.

The designs were selected by an international panel of judges from a group of 44 shortlisted designs. One winner will be announced in time for construction of the 80,000-seat stadium to begin by the end of 2003.
