The architect faced the challenge of designing a residential complex on two vacant lots straddling a two-story prewar apartment building. A scheme that fuses the architectural language of the existing structure with four new ones was proposed. The existing building serves as a threshold, allowing for a subtle shift from historic to modern throughout the entry sequence. The new structures wrap around the historic one, forming an open, central courtyard. On
top of the existing building, a garden with an edgeless pool will become the public heart of the complex. The design simultaneously meets the objective of maximizing sellable area within municipal zoning constraints while furthering innovative design as an asset to the community.
