Program:
The need to combine a community college with a new branch
of a well-established university at one location propelled
the development of this campus in a distressed geographic
area in dire need of facilities of higher education. Few colocated
campuses in the U.S. have succeeded, and the clients were
wary. Nevertheless, the project was launched.
Solution:
A sophisticated and flexible design allowed both institutions
distinct but unified appearances and turned out to be wildly
successful. Staff share resources, and financial savings of
15 percent were immediately realized, with 10 percent life-cycle
cost savings anticipated during the next 25 years. Programmatically,
the institutions overlap smoothly, and student enrollment
exceeded first semester expectations by more than 100. Local
residents share the benefit of abundant lawns, walking trails,
and wetland boardwalks that characterize the natural beauty
of the ecologically sensitive site.
