The prevalent architectural discussion
of the urban conditions tends to focus on the delineation
of physical edges. The renovations to Lincoln Street Garage
afforded us the opportunity to address the emotive edge of
the city as well.
It is an edge attached to an element
of uncertainty, both unkempt and unfinished. It is inconstant
and indiscreet.
Unlike most buildings in Boston, this
building does not maintain a discreet presence on the street.
It is well worn, commonplace. It puts the layers of its own
evolution on public display: an evolution of use. The hybrid
structure, topped by an internet startup company, points forward
to a new information culture, while its lower garage and supermarket
-- active and open to the life of the street -- embrace the
economics of the passing industrial culture.
Lincoln Street Garage represents a forthright
stance in the development of a place as it evolves from things
familiar to those imagined.
