Innovations:
Andrews University, established by the Seventh-day-Adventist
Church in order to prepare persons for lives of leadership,
stewardship, and service, is committed to providing high quality
Christian education in the context of the Adventist faith.
Andrews welcomes men and women from all nations and faiths
who meet the qualifications established by the institution
and who subscribe to the ideals of the University.
In this context, the Division of Architecture
seeks to identify, understand, and teach the nature and practice
of architecture. In the millennia- long history of architecture
in which we would take our place, architecture has commonly
been understood as the art of building. This art manifests
specific architectural concerns (e.g. durability, convenience,
beauty, and decorum) in ways that satisfy both the practical
needs and the intellectual, aesthetic, and spiritual sensibilities
of human beings. We desire our faculty and aspire to educate
our students - whether as practitioners or simply as citizens
- to pursue excellence in the lifelong vocation of architecture.
The foremost purpose of this pursuit is the creation of a
physical environment for the glory of God and the good of
human beings. Toward this end, we structure both the substance
and the manner of our curriculum, hoping with increasing knowledge
and care to engage and promote those students and faculty
members whose interest and calling is architecture.

The school offer a community design studio called the Integral
Studio (IS). The Integral Studio is a faculty-led research
studio aiming to provide leadership in forging the path of
change for architecture and urbanism in the contemporary city,
specficially in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
The curriculum relfects faculty expertise
in four knowledge bases: design theory, urbanism, sustainability
(energy) and tectonics. History and theory elucidates the
philosophical foundations and contemporary ideas of each of
these knowledge bases.
The curriculum is designed to explore
a deep integration of the knowledge provided by courses in
technology, history, analysis and programming.

The College of Architecture and Planning offers an
interdisciplinary foundation year program for all entering
first year students, followed by other interdisciplinary studios
and seminars and upper years. The College has three research
and service units: Community Based Projects, the Land Design
Institute and the Building Futures Institute. Affiliated with
the College is the Center for Energy Research, Education and
Service. All these units have an impact on the undergraduate
and graduate students and play a role in cultivating the research
culture in the College. The M.Arch. II Post-Professional Program
attracts students from around the world and provides and environment
for research-Based knowledge development. The Department of
Architecture sponsors exchange and travel experiences to Canada,
Europe, the Far East, South Asia, and Latin America, and conducts
virtual studios with universities globally. All architecture
students participate in the 4th-year internship program. The
Department is fully immersed in advanced digital media and
design, starting in the 2nd-year studio sequence and supported
by both university and external sources. High-end laptop computers
are required of all students enrolled in an architecture major.
In the fall of 2002, new freshmen will start in a new curriculum
leading to a Master's of Architecture as a first professional
degree.

Undergraduate architecture fees are $500 freshman
year, $800 sophomore year, $500 years 3-5.

Interior design architecture (B. M)
Innovations:
The BAC is known nationally for its concurrent academic
and practice curricula that form the cornerstone of its Bachelor's
and master's degree programs. The BAC's predominantly volunteer
faculty is composed of practicing architects and designers
whose links to the profession provide students with direct
access to pragmatic knowledge of professional practice. Drawing
upon these strengths, the BAC recently made curricular innovations
to the thesis process by developing integrative building systems
seminars. The seminars require that thesis students recruit
a structural and a mechanical engineer to act as advisors
throughout the design process to better integrate building
systems in their thesis projects. Students approach and collaborate
with expert engineers in ways similar to those in design practice.
Students learn how to take initiative in soliciting input
from engineers and how to form constructive relationships
with engineers and architects that will be essential to their
continued success as practicing professionals on a design
team. This new process better prepares students for the kind
of collaborative work practiced in architectural firms and
ensures that all graduates have completed a comprehensive
design project that integrates building technologies continuously
at several scales and throughout different phases of design.
