My Boston: David Manfredi

July, 2008

David Manfredi, founding partner and principal at Elkus/Manfredi Architects, takes us on a tour of eight buildings his firm designed to house Harvard grad students. They both blend in with their neighborhood—and stand out as unique works.

He then leads us to the beloved Boston icon, Fenway Park, the "godfather" of a whole new generation of ballparks. He notes that Fenway, shaped by the context of its place, is all about "irregularity" and "idiosyncrasy." Manfredi, whose firm has done significant work near Fenway, observes that the park is a "crucial piece" of the neighborhood.

From there, we go to Mount Auburn Cemetery, which Manfredi describes as "pivotal in the development of public park space in America" because it "finds its inspiration in the land." And then on to the Granary Burying Ground, a pocket of green space that provides unique views of the backsides of Boston's buildings. Manfredi says the "raw backsides" offer another way to look at Boston's basic infrastructure.
